Amtrak Equipment on the SMVRR
January 23-26, 2006

Amtrak #67 and #31046 were brought into Santa Maria last Friday afternoon by the SMVRR
and tied down here on the east side of Miller Street. January 23, 2006.

This view is from across the parking lot in front of the Santa Maria Bonita School District Office on Miller.

At right, the empty SMVRR mainline ends a few hundred yards to the east (the direction of view, more or less). A few tank cars are visible just to the east of the Amtrak equipment as well. The Amtrak equipment is here for multi-fire company first response emergency training.

Fire departments from around the region came for training. January 25, 2006.

SMVRR No. 1801 has hooked up and is ready to roll. At far left and in the far distance sits the restored SMVRR Caboose No. 180 (yellow speck) at the depot.

Note one of the SMVRR logos on the door of the enginehouse directly across Miller Street from where the Amtrak equipment stayed.

Hassles with the Amtrak diesel's air system delayed the operation about an hour.

January 26, 2006 Santa Maria Times article.

This was the first time that Amtrak equipment ever ran on the SMVRR.

SMVRR No. 1801 prepares to haul the Amtrak train back to the exchange with the Union Pacific at Guadalupe.

Thanks to Ed Couch for these last three pictures.

At left, the Amtrak equipment is being pushed across Miller Street by SMVRR No. 1801. No. 1801 is barely visible (red) behind the Amtrak units.

At left below, the train is pulling up in the yard alongside the enginehouse (light yellow building on the left). At this point, No. 1801 did a run-around so that it could pull the Amtrak units the rest of the way to Guadalupe. The picture below shows the train after the run-around has been accomplished. Then it headed west...
