Oceano Depot
September 02, 2006

Here are some pics of the Ocean Depot taken while waiting for the Coast Starlight to come by (it never did while there).

That's SMVRR Caboose No. 170.

Historic Oceano Train Depot was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1904 to replace the earlier station that was destroyed by fire. It included quarters for the station master's family upstairs. Long the major railroad station in this town, it was moved to its present site, and reversed so that its more interesting "railroad" side faces the historic and famous Highway 1. [Source]

At right is the southerly view down the Union Pacific RR mainline from which the northbound Coast Starlight would have come had the timing been right.

The Oceano Railroad Depot is one of the few type 22 depots remaining on the old southern Pacific Coast Line, and has been preserved as closely as possible to its original state. It was constructed in 1904, and currently serves as a railroad museum and also a museum for the Community of Oceano. The depot is usually open to the public on Sundays, from 1 to 4 p.m. For further information, contact Oceano Depot Association President Linda Austin at (805) 489-5446. 1650 Front St., Oceano, CA. Satellite view: The depot is about center between the two large clumps of trees.
